What are Intelligent Multi-Agents (IMA)?

Intelligent Agents (IA): the umbrella

Intelligent Agents (IA) are AI that does not just answer, it acts: an agent you brief in plain language that does real work end to end, remembers your business, and stays accountable to you. The step past the chatbot.

That last line is the whole point. A chatbot is a text box that replies and then waits for you. An Intelligent Agent has a goal, can use tools, and keeps going until the job is done. You do not copy its answer somewhere and finish the work yourself; the agent does the work and reports back.

Intelligent Multi-Agents (IMA): the GATE form

One agent is a big step up from a chatbot, but a single agent has a ceiling. Ask it to run marketing, chase sales, answer support, and keep the books all at once and it starts dropping detail, because one working memory can only hold so much.

Intelligent Multi-Agents (IMA) are the GATE-specific form. The shift is from “an AI that helps with a task” to “a team of AI that runs the work.” Each agent is briefed on one job and judged on it, the way you would staff a small team.

What makes a fleet one system

A fleet is not a folder of separate bots that happen to share a login. Three things turn it into a single system:

• One shared memory. Your brand, your tone, your customers, and what was decided last quarter live in one place every agent reads. A new agent inherits what the fleet already knows instead of starting cold. This is why agents need memory to be useful at work.
• Coordination. Agents delegate, review each other’s work, and escalate to a human only when judgement is needed. The marketing agent hands a campaign to the content agent, who hands the copy to the agent that publishes it.
• They do the work. The fleet runs the job and reports back, around the clock, rather than returning a draft for a person to finish.
